Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff after a rollercoaster last day of play.
The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his only previous tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off win against the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
The champion entered the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger moved a stroke clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last green.
Playoff Decider
This set up a play-off at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to take the championship and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.

The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to make up, finishing one shot short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an superb last round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
