At least 64 civilians died in a security raid targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's past.

Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, local authorities said. Over 80 people were detained.

Violent conflicts commenced when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "horrified" by the police operation, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the headquarters of a major organised crime groups.

State officials confirmed a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community Response

Locals have compared the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police stated over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were seized in the operation, together with dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The coordinated mission by civil and military police follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are believed to be members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.

Larger Framework

Major law enforcement actions are not uncommon in Brazil ahead of major international events in the South American nation.

The UN climate summit COP30 is scheduled in the northern urban center in November.
