A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
International terror listing and legal charges
Recently, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.
German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.
Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.
Court proceedings and cross-border allegations
The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.
In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.
Regional context and group hierarchy
The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.
Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.
Prior legal cases and global responses
A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.
America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.
“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
