The buzz about the recent awards show has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, players can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
