In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
