Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Star Sets Aside Egotism Outside.
A single omission proved sufficient. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is extremely shrewd not to know that winning the World Cup is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, even if it is also on the midfielder to fit into the tactical structures and squad hierarchies necessary with England now that he is returned to the manager's welcoming fold.
The manager desires his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is about using it in the right way. Personal talent is important but England understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when celebrity takes over. Nevertheless, a point has been made.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after his omission of last month’s squad. He observed the national side qualify at the tournament without him. He saw the young talent shine as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as the coach talk about loving the group’s energy and values. Naturally, he has responded in top form, netting important strikes for his club against their rivals and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to picking a fight with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period out of the team has made him realize that playing for one's country is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is unafraid to drop big names.
“There is no problem regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel stated. “Bellingham possesses that aggression. You need a certain edge to succeed at the top that he has. We all need to support him and create a setting which he can [have] this edge in matches and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham took up the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming meaningless matches against one opponent and the other. Who else? Well, how about another talent? This is another prodigious No 10 in need of support and direction. He has been absent for the national team since March and has struggled to reach his best recently but Tuchel was impressed by the 25-year-old after how he played in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund this week.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the various creators at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to include Cole Palmer once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the tournament be too many? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the optimal mix at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the team, restricting Harry Kane’s game in the process.
It is hard to see the current manager doing similar if it hurts the team harmony. Space exists for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near the striker. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “He is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision regarding him for a long time. In my view it matches his abilities best.”
Tuchel conceded there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then obviously an issue exists, be it the position, the setup, I don’t know.
“I think he is also so used to representing Man City in a particular setup, with a clear task. I think he profits greatly from clear instructions. What is my position? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?
Tuchel discussed one star making runs for tap-ins and Foden netting strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for City at left-back. Interest is high.
The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for trying new things.
Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It is remarkable that one must look back to the latter assisting Kane to net in a friendly win against the Scots in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo linked up for a score. The coach will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.
“At this point at some point it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of the player under scrutiny. He may not be guaranteed to start versus the upcoming opponents. The manager wants him onside but he will be observing him closely. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an even better one.
