The UK and US have concluded a major trade agreement that will ensure no tariffs on British drug exports going into the US market.

The Terms of the Deal

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has agreed to increase expenditure on medicines through the National Health Service (NHS). This commitment secures that tariffs on these key goods will be held at nothing for a timeframe of the next three years.

This agreement is in response to recent statements to dramatically increase tariffs on patented pharmaceutical products, with figures floated reaching one hundred percent.

"This arrangement between the United Kingdom bolsters the international landscape for new treatments and establishes much-needed balance to American-British drug exports," an announcement declared.

Trade Significance

Pharmaceuticals are one of the UK's biggest goods shipped to the United States, which is easily the biggest buyer for leading British pharmaceutical firms.

Export figures reveal that in the 12 months to the end of the third quarter, the UK shipped medicines valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure accounted for a significant portion of British export trade in that span.

"This guarantee protects jobs, boosts investment and facilitates the UK to establish itself as a worldwide center for life sciences," the Business and Trade Secretary stated.

Specific British Pledges

The agreement entails several notable pledges from the United Kingdom:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it considers new medicines to be prohibitively costly by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to increase overall NHS spending on medicines from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Refund Ceiling: The sum drug companies must return to the NHS to stay within budget will be limited at fifteen percent. Previously, repayments topped twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

This agreement takes place against a long-running dispute between the pharmaceutical industry and the UK government over spending levels and NHS adoption.

The disagreement were exacerbated by arguments that US patients were charged a premium for the equivalent treatments than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several significant pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been paused or scrapped, while major investments have been announced toward US facilities.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS must increase expenditure on treatments, noting that its expenditure on drugs had shrunk as a share of its total funding over the past decade.
